The organisers of the Grandvalira-Soldeu 2012 Women’s Alpine Ski World Cup have declared Andorra the real winner of this event, which was staged recently in the Pyrenean principality. Authorities, businesses and citizens all pulled together so that Andorra’s World Cup could be rightly described as a model of its kind, firmly placing the country on the international Alpine skiing map. All this and more could be gleaned from the words of the Grandvalira-Soldeu 2012 Women’s Alpine Ski World Cup Organising Committee at a press conference called to round up the successful hosting of the events from February 10 to 12.
At the conference, Francesc Camp, Andorra’s Tourism and Environment Minister, Conrad Blanch, Managing Director of the Organising Committee, Albert Coma, President of the Andorra Ski Federation (FAE), and Race Director Jordi Pujol all agreed that the Avet slope had proven to be ideal for this kind of international event and were full of praise for the good work done by all involved, even in overcoming adverse weather conditions.
At the end of the competition, María Hoefler-Riesch, 2011 World Cup champion in the overall standings and third in the Giant Slalom at Soldeu, declared that Avet was “the best World Cup Giant Slalom slope”.
At total of 86 skiers and from 17 countries took part, watched by 14,000 enthusiastic spectators, who packed the stands at Grandvalira-Soldeu 2012.
Finally, the competition was covered by some 3,000 accredited media professionals.
